The beautiful new Ferndale Library was made possible thanks to the generosity of individual donors, the resourcefulness of library supporters, and the support of the City of Ferndale. The Foundation was proud to play a part in helping to make the new Ferndale Library a reality by working with an extremely generous anonymous donor who provided the $1 million lead gift to get the project started, and 2 additional challenge matches totaling more than $1.5 million to help make this project happen. The Ferndale Library is a wonderful example of what is possible when people come together around a common goal.
Designed by SHKS Architects, the new library is based on several years of public feedback from focus groups and other planning meetings as well as communication with staff combined with their own library building experience. They heard strong messages from the community that the building should be simple, cozy, modern and adaptable and that it should have clear connections to the surrounding natural areas. Consequently, the building is oriented towards Mt. Baker and Schell Marsh, providing visual lines from Main Street through the building to the unique views beyond.
