Joan Beardsley Memorial Scholarship
Thank you for your interest in the Joan Beardsley Memorial Scholarship. The Beardsley family established the award to honor Joan’s commitment to science education and her desire to see more young women get degrees and enter careers in science and mathematics. It is awarded annually to a female graduate of a high school in Bellingham, WA, who plans to study science or math at a four-year college.
Since the scholarship’s inception, we’ve awarded thousands of dollars to students studying as close to Bellingham as Western Washington University and the University of Washington, and as far away as Yale and Dartmouth. Joan would be proud of these young scientists and mathematicians, and the family is honored by your interest in supporting the scholarship.
Joan and her husband, Dick Beardsley, raised four children in Bellingham and were engaged members of the Bellingham and Whatcom County communities for more than 30 years. Joan taught Chemistry at Bellingham High School, where she won a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1988. She was elected to the Bellingham City Council in 2006 and served until her death in 2007. She grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Wellesley College in 1964 with a degree in Chemistry.
